Visit Šibenik – the city of history and culture

Rich historic-cultural heritage, the vicinity of two national parks, slow-paced Mediterranean lifestyle and charming islands of the archipelago of Šibenik are some of the things which make Šibenik special. One can hardly resist not visiting this charming city. That is why we're taking you on a tour of Šibenik and recommending places and sights you have to see while staying in this fascinating Dalmatian city.

Must-see places and sights in Šibenik

Šibenik is a city where history and culture co-exist in a fascinating, unusual way.
One of the examples is the symbol of Šibenik, St. Jacob's Cathedral. This renaissance building is a UNESCO world heritage site. It's special for the way it was constructed – it's made entirely out of stone, without any binding material.
Besides the cathedral, Šibenik is home to 24 churches from the Middle Ages, renaissance and baroque periods. There are plenty of them for sacred architecture enthusiasts!

After taking a tour of the cathedral, pay a visit to the Šibenik Museum located in the former duke's palace near St. Jacob's Cathedral. More than 150000 permanent exhibits and diverse audiovisual content will tell you an exciting story about this city. Besides permanent exhibits, the Museum often puts on exhibitions of notable Croatian artists' works.

We recommend taking a tour of Šibenik's fortresses which were built at strategic locations in order to defend Šibenik. The oldest one is St. Michael's fortress built in the 11th century. As of lately, it's being used as a backdrop to many summer concerts, and Gregory porter and The National are just some of the famous names who made summer nights in Šibenik unforgettable. St. Nicholas' fortress, located at the St. Anthony's Canal, is surrounded by the sea so it's best to reach it by boat. It's also on the UNESCO's world heritage list since 2017.

Take a trip back to the Middle Ages in the embrace of the middleage garden at St. Lawrence's center. You'll be welcomed by lush, scented green garden divided into four fields with two paths and a fountain in the center of the park. Hansel, roses, thyme, figs and pomegranate are grown and taken care of by the locals. You will find a cafe, restaurant and gift shop there which will see to it that you fully enjoy this hidden green oasis.

Tip: To all foodies appreciating exquisite food, we recommend a Michelin star restaurant Pelegrini.

Trips from Šibenik – islands and national parks
After exploring Šibenik as recommended, it's a pity to miss out on visiting charming islands around the city. From the islet of Obonjan, a popular glamping destination, the island of Prvić with the Faust Vrančić Memorial Center to the peaceful Zlarin, an island with the longest boardwalk in Croatia. You can get to Zlarin by ferry; it will take you only 30 minutes. Of course, all islands have great beaches so make sure to bring your swimming suits.

Besides, it would be terrible if you miss visiting two national parks near Šibenik: Krka and Kornati. Krka National Park will amaze you with its seven magnificent waterfalls and untouched nature, while Kornati – with the most indented coast in the Mediterranean sea – will tell you a story about the somewhat unkind Dalmatian scenery, difficult life of the locals filled with hard work and the unreal beauty that never ceases to amaze.
