Zagorje was one of the important areas of the Middle Ages. As evidence there are numerous medievel castles and forts, of which Trakošćan is certainly one of the most popular. You can complete the bustling excursion by visiting the castles Bežanec, Mihanović, Veliki Tabor, Stubički Golubovec, Sveti Križ Začretje.
If you want to find out more about the life of the first people, visit the museum in Hušnjak, near Krapina where Neanderthal remains are found. A snooze of sightseeing can be found in one of the local restaurants and family farms and tasting the best of local gastronomy. Taste the traditional turkey with mlinci (mlinci is something similar to bread crust), homemade cheese, and the inevitable Zagorje „štrukle”- cheese filled pastry. Zagorje is known as the center of health tourism thanks to the great natural springs of thermal water, which is why almost every hotel has its own spa and wellness center.
